The essential oils used in aromatherapy are the purest gifts of nature. These are plant extracts that are culled from the plants by pressing or steaming its leaves, buds, flowers, or barks as the case may be. Sometimes aromatherapy essential oils are yielded by the seeds, or in certain cases seed pods, or fruits. Some plants that yield aromatherapy essential oils are grasses.

Different aromatherapy essential oils have different properties and as such have varying therapeutic effects. Some of these ease problems like muscular pain, pain in joints etc. Those aromatherapy oils that are most effective in aches and pains are lavender, rosemary, wintergreen, and chamomile. They can be rubbed in with carrier oils, or can be added to warm bath water with Epsom salts, as is commonly done in the case of lavender. Aromatherapy essential oils can be used separately, or in varying combinations with each other, as guided by an aromatherapy practitioner.

Tea tree oil is one of the most potent of oils of aromatherapy. It is an all purpose aromatherapy oil. It is most ideal as a disinfectant. It is very effective for skin complaints as well. Though most people are aware of the powers of aromatherapy oils as an air purifier, as an aphrodisiac, and a pain balm, very few are aware of its potentials in aiding digestion. In fact there is more than one aromatherapy oil that aids digestion. Oils of ginger, black pepper, and basil, are effective in curing indigestion problems. All these three spices aid digestion and cure cold even when used in forms other than as aromatherapy oils. For example, crushed ginger, ground basil leaves, or black pepper powder can be boiled in water for a while and the tea or coffee made of this brew is effective in curing cold and indigestion.
